A Personal Essay on Deforestation in Calabarzon

ECHOES
OF GREEN

The Cost of Turning Forests into Cities

I still remember the fresh, earthy scent of the forest and the endless green that once surrounded me as a child. Back then, every breath felt light, and the air carried a quiet sense of life. Today, those memories are slowly being replaced by the choking dust of construction and the rising shadows of tall buildings.

PERSONAL
WITNESS TO
TRANSFORMATION

As a student, I was surrounded by trees that made every place feel alive. Over time, I watched machines arrive and cut them down one by one. The once vibrant landscape slowly turned gray and empty. The fresh scent of leaves was replaced by smoke and dust, and the peaceful silence of nature was replaced by noise.

Walking through these areas now, I feel a deep emptiness. It is not just the loss of trees, but the loss of something meaningful that once gave comfort and life.

AIR POLLUTION
FROM LOST
FORESTS

The absence of trees has made the air heavier and more dangerous to breathe. In construction areas, dust fills the surroundings, causing coughing and discomfort. Trees once acted as natural air filters, providing clean oxygen and protecting us from pollution. Without them, the air feels polluted and unsafe.

Soil Erosion & Water Problems

Without trees to hold the soil together, heavy rains easily wash it away. Before, the ground absorbed water naturally, but now concrete surfaces prevent this. Water quickly runs off, carrying soil with it and leaving the land bare — increasing the risk of flooding in nearby areas.

BIODIVERSITY
COLLAPSE

The loss of forests has also led to the disappearance of many plants and animals. I no longer hear birds in the morning or see insects that once filled the environment with life. Their habitats have been destroyed, leaving them with nowhere to go.

This loss of biodiversity disrupts the balance of nature and creates a silent, empty environment that feels far from what it used to be.

INTENSIFIED
FLOODING
RISK

Flooding has become more severe as forests are replaced by concrete. Trees once absorbed rainwater, reducing the chances of floods. Now, water flows quickly across hard surfaces and collects in large amounts. I have experienced walking through floodwaters during storms, something that rarely happened before.

This shows how urban development, when not planned carefully, can increase environmental risks.

CULTURAL
AND SPIRITUAL
LOSSES

Beyond physical changes, the loss of forests also affects culture and identity. Many Filipino traditions and beliefs are connected to nature. Forests were once places of peace, reflection, and spiritual connection. As they disappear, these traditions slowly fade. Personally, I feel the loss of that quiet connection with nature, replaced by noise and chaos. It is like losing a part of our heritage.

CONCLUSION:
A CALL
FOR BALANCE

The changes I have witnessed — polluted air, damaged soil, silent wildlife, and worsening floods — are clear signs of what happens when forests are lost. These are not just environmental issues; they are personal and cultural losses that affect everyone. Forests are essential to our health, our safety, and our identity.

As Filipinos, we must find a balance between progress and preservation. If we do not act now, we may be left with nothing but memories of the forests that once gave us life.
